When I’m not traveling or planning a trip, I enjoy watching travel-themed movies with my husband. Below are some movies we’ve watched that we’ve enjoyed over the past year that has inspired us to continue to plan one road trip after another.
The Fundamentals of Caring
As a lover of road trips, this movie really appealed to me. In The Fundamentals of Caring, two unlikely people learn not only to tolerate each other but to appreciate and care for one another in a road trip that overcomes disappointment as they seek out roadside attractions and unique stops on their journey. If you’ve ever been nervous or afraid to step out of your comfort zone, this movie is for you.
Ed Harris plays a dying photojournalist whose last wish is for his son to accompany him on a road trip from New York to Kansas to process his last rolls of Kodachrome film before the lab closes forever. While somewhat predictable, the movie is a powerful portrayal of life’s pain, regrets, and moving past them. Keep tissues handy. You may tear up just a bit.

This documentary has really bad reviews but my husband and I watched it and actually enjoyed it. A German couple set out to travel North America from Canada to Mexico in a school bus that they converted while sharing their day to day happenings while asking themselves what they need to be happy. I was fascinated by their journey and their skoolie which honestly, appealed to the wanna-be nomad in me. If you have two extra hours with not a lot to do, go ahead and watch this movie.
When it comes to favorite travel books, Kon Tiki is at the top of my list. I read the book to my kids during our homeschool years and I don’t think anything other than The Hobbit or The Lord of the Rings, has ever fascinated my oldest son as much as this story. For me, the movie dulls in comparison, as movies after do after reading a book and inserting your own imaginative imagery, but if you’ve never read the book, you won’t be disappointed. This is an amazing story of how one man set out to prove to himself and mankind that his theory that the South Seas were originally settled by the people of South America was correct.

National Parks Adventure
While traveling to the national parks may not be a realistic goal for many of us right now, this movie is the next best thing. Plus, you’ll see the parks as you’ve never seen them before- even if you did have the opportunity to visit. Beautiful imagery, narrated by Robert Redford.
