One of my favorite attractions when traveling as a young child with my own mom and dad was Monticello, home of President Thomas Jefferson, located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Even at a young age I was enthralled by the unique architectural design of the property and I was fascinated by the stories of historical significance that our tour guide shared. I remember that I was especially interested in the kitchen that was located in the basement. The concept seemed so foreign to my 8-year old self.
As a young mom, my family returned to Charlottesville with three kids in tow, specifically to tour Monticello. Only we were running very late and opted to tour only the visitor center which was soon closing. My homeschooled children didn’t seem to be disappointed and enjoyed the exhibits and short movie that was shown. Though they did remark that they had not learned one thing new about Thomas Jefferson from the movie. I guess we had our studies and this out of print book written by Robert M. Quakenbush to thank for their knowledge.
My kids may not have been disappointed, but I was. I had hoped to see other historic properties on our very short drive through Charlottesville. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I’ll be able to visit with my husband this summer to see everything we missed on that trip. Charlottesville may be known for its history, but that’s not the only draw to the area. Since my visit to Charlottesville, they’ve become known for their shopping, culinary offerings and wine trail. But what I really want to see is not nearly as sophisticated as sipping a glass of wine on the patio of a hip restaurant. Nope, that experience would simply be a bonus. I’m most excited to see the Love Butt. There you have it. Leave it to me to find the fun, quirky, roadside attraction in a community steeped in culture and history.
Want to learn more about Charlottesville? My friend Deb has written quite a few posts on the area.
