Hocking Hills is one of my favorite destinations to visit in Ohio- or anywhere- so it came as no surprise when I heard that TripAdvisor announced Hocking Hills had made the Top Ten of its prestigious list of 25 Travel Destinations with Skyrocketing Interest in 2016. How cool is this for Ohio?
Other destinations in the top ten ranking include Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Glacier National Park in Montana. A destination unlike any other, Ohio’s Hocking Hills boasts spectacular rock formations, carved eons ago by glaciers, which draw visitors from around the globe to the unique region. An easy, scenic drive from most major cities and only an hour from Columbus, Hocking Hills’ gorgeous waterfalls, soaring cliffs and craggy caves guarantee a relaxing, peaceful escape from the pandemonium of life.
Travelers can immerse themselves in the beauty of the Hocking Hills via off-road Segways, horseback, kayak or via zipline canopy tours. Dubbed the “Canopy Tour Capital of the Midwest,” multiple world-class zipline operators offer dozens of different tours. For example, a Super Zip soars at speeds of more than 50 miles per hour, while an XTreme canopy tour takes travelers right through a waterfall and into a cave for a truly unusual birds-eye view of the season’s splendor. Meanwhile, an off-road Segway tour gives visitors a more ground-hugging experience. The all-new High Rock Adventures takes travelers on guided eco tours and heart-pounding rappelling trips, giving adventure-seekers a ringside seat for an experience as beautiful as it is exciting.
No visit to the area is complete without a hike to Old Man’s Cave, Ash Cave, Conkle’s Hollow or Cedar Falls, no matter what time of year it is. Visitors enjoy the lush, mossy greenery of the Hills in the summer, as well as the picturesque snow-capped trees and magnificent ice formations in the wintertime. This winter, there’s no more magical way to step away from hectic holiday hustle than a moonlight stroll back into majestic Ash Cave. Held Dec. 10 from 5-7 p.m., the annual event treats visitors to the warm glow of a cozy fire and refreshments. Carolers dressed in period costume sing songs that reverberate in grand fashion, thanks to Ash Cave’s natural amphitheater contour. A visit with an old-fashioned Santa and helping decorate a Christmas tree with treats for wildlife make the experience truly unforgettable for young travelers.
