When it comes to planning family vacations, I can say that New Orleans has never crossed my mind as somewhere to spend an extended amount of time. I guess I’ve always had the impression that New Orleans is not very welcoming to families.
I’ve even gone as far as to express my disdain for one aspect of New Orleans and shared why my visit to Bourbon Street left me heavy hearted. If you read that post, you’ll know I detested that one small part of the city. It’s important to remember that New Orleans has so much more to offer.
The big question, the one you really may want to ask is this:
Is New Orleans a family friendly destination?
If I had only stepped foot on Bourbon Street and I didn’t see the cemeteries or the Garden District of even parts of the French Quarter, my answer may be different. But I did see those places and because of that, I can say YES, without a doubt that New Orleans is a family friendly destination.
While New Orleans may be known for parties and entertainment geared towards adults, those sites can be avoided. Like me, you’ll discover that New Orleans offers many attractions and options for families.
Next time I travel to New Orleans, and I hope there is a next time, I wouldn’t hesitate to take my entire family. New Orleans offers a rich culture, overflows with history, exudes Southern charm and as I’ve mentioned, has some great food!
Have you traveled to New Orleans with your family?

I grew up 30 minutes north of New Orleans and I always look forward to visiting with my son. With a little planning, it can be a great place to visit with kids. Although this post is a little over a year old, I think it is relevant especially with the super bowl and Mardi Gras around the corner. http://sherristravelingclassroom.com/2011/10/29/top-ten-things-to-do-with-kids-in-the-big-easy/

Jenilee, Did you see my other posts on New Orleans? I’d love to give you some ideas of what to do with your family if you decide to go. If you’re driving, I could actually give you pointers for your entire route. 🙂

I hear what you mean about Bourbon Street. However, I had a wonderful time in other parts of New Orleans and would not hesitate to bring my family there. The history, the food, the music, are all wonderful things to expose kids to.

You’re right, Michell. If I’d only experienced Bourbon Street, New Orleans would be the last place I’d take my kids. Bourbon Street certainly isn’t family friendly- I wish I’d not gone there- but there are parts of New Orleans that are so beautiful and historic that I found myself sad to be leaving. I can’t wait to visit again AND next time, I definitely want my family to visit with me.
