This fun DIY Disney Travel Savings Jar is ideal for anyone who has ever priced a Disney vacation. Everyone knows that it is not an inexpensive destination. For most families, a trip to the Magic Kingdom requires a bit of planning and saving. And while it’s great for mom and dad to sock a bit of money away, I tend to think children benefit from contributing to the travel fund as well.
One way to encourage your children to save their pennies and get excited by saving for a Disney vacation is to designate a vacation jar where they can save extra money and literally watch their savings grow. I made a general travel jar with my kids years ago but I’m planning a trip to Disney World with my daughter and I thought it would be fun to have a special Disney travel jar specifically to use for our Disney fund.
In less than an hour, we turned an empty pickle jar into a Disney Travel Jar. It’s super easy to make, and pretty inexpensive!
DIY Disney Travel Savings Jar
What you need:
A clean glass jar
Black Fabric
Red Duck Tape
Red Scrapbook or Construction Paper- I used red & white polka dot paper, but you could use these Disney-themed scrapbook pages too.
Tacky Glue
Black Self Adhesive Jewels
Matte Mod Podge
Jewel-It Tacky Glue
A Foam Brush
Cut circles out of scrapbook paper or construction paper. Using a template like this is the ideal way to make your Disney travel jar perfect. No sloppy circles here!
Draw a Mickey or Minnie design on your jar with a Sharpie. You can easily make your own pattern by using a larger circle for the head with two smaller circles for the ears.
Apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to your Disney travel jar (I use Matte Mod Podge, but you can use glossy if you want more shine) using a foam brush.
Stick the paper circles on the jar and apply a thin layer of Mod Podge over the paper and smooth.
Apply a layer of Jewel-It Tacky Glue to the character outline and begin to stick the black jewels to the outline.
Next, cut a piece of black cloth for the lid. You can cut a square of fabric, or cut a circle slightly larger than your lid. To hold it in place I applied a thin layer of Tacky Glue to the lid.
I then created a bow out of duct tape to go on the top of the lid for our Disney travel savings jar.
Measure a strip of duct tape to encircle the lid. Fold the duct tape over in thirds to create a ribbon. Glue it along the front of the lid and tape it in place.
Create the bow by taking a 5 inch strip of duct tape (you may need more or less, depending on the size of your jar) and folding it over. Scrunch the bow in the middle and secure a strip of tape to hold it in place. Tape the bow to the duct tape ribbon.
Create a mini-bow for the character on the front of the jar.
Set aside your Disney travel savings jar and allow to dry.
When your jar is dry, display it proudly and encourage your kids to save those quarters! And enjoy that Disney vacation! Making this super easy Disney travel savings jar is a great way to get everyone in the family on board with saving money for a great holiday at Disney.

Great timing! We just booked a last-minute Disney trip, and this would be a great way to involve my girls in the planning and give them a limit to their souvenir spending. 🙂 I’m checking out your other Disney posts now. Lots of useful info. Thanks!

What a great idea. Yours is perfect of Disney, but I like that it could easily be adapted for any trip… even just a day trip activity the kids want to do (like a trip to a local amusement park).
We are actually hoping to take a Disney cruise this year or next – I am going to start one of these with the kids so they will have some spending money when we go.
