What would possess me to agree to a road trip across the country, from Ohio to Colorado, in the month of January to visit a ski resort? I don’t like to drive in the snow. I don’t like cold. And I don’t like to ski. But I am a mom. And I love my kids. And my kids….well, they love to snowboard.
Earlier this month, two of my children left home to serve on an extended mission trip to Mexico. That means of our three children, only my 20-year old is left at home, but not for long. He’s in the military and will deploy in a few short weeks.
My husband and I had discussed taking a family trip before his deployment, but with his siblings away, we knew what he’d like more than anything- a snowboard trip to Colorado. Josh is a snowboard instructor at our local resort in Ohio which, as you can imagine, does not have the mountains that Colorado has.
When the opportunity arose for a trip to Beaver Creek that coincided with the dates he wanted to take off work, I knew I had to surprise him. So my husband and I began to make plans so we could have a special time with him before his deployment. It turns out that once your child is working and in college, it’s a bit difficult to surprise them with a trip. So it didn’t take long before the cat was out of the bag.
Our plan was for my husband and I to road trip from our home in Ohio to the resort in Colorado. We’d check into our condo at The Charter at Beaver Creek, a property managed by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, and pick up Josh and his girlfriend the next day so we could spend the weekend together in Colorado.
So we set off. Despite some icy snow at the beginning, our road trip was great.
We stopped at roadside attractions and other quirky stops and followed the yellow brick road to Oz, before finding our way back to I-70.
After two full days of driving, we finally checked into the resort, which was wonderful!
We were given a two bedroom, two bath property with incredible views of the mountains.
Our condo was beautifully decorated and felt like home as soon as we stepped inside. With a complimentary bottle of wine waiting for us on the counter, logs for the fireplace, and plush robes set out on our beds, we were cozy in no time.
Beaver Creek Resort is just over two hours from the Denver International Airport in good traffic. We were supposed to leave by six a.m. to pick up the kids but thanks to Winter Storm Jonas, their plane was delayed. I was so relieved it wasn’t cancelled, and picking them up a few hours later certainly wasn’t an inconvenience for my husband and I, it only meant we could stay snug and warm in our large comfy bed. Which was perfect, because I am not a morning person.
By the time we picked the kids up and arrived back at the resort, it was time for my husband and I to check out Beaver Creek Village for the Winter Culinary Weekend event. I’d purchased tickets for the Burgers & Beers event for my husband and I and though we invited the kids, they were content to watch TV and rest.
Burgers & Beers was fantastic! My husband and I hopped from tent to tent in the plaza presenting out bracelets and sampling the burgers prepared from some of the top chefs in Beaver Creek Village. Selections varied from a Rib Burger served with Lobster Mac & Cheese to an Asian inspired pork sandwich, to a tasty burger on a Brioche bun and loaded with guacamole.
I’m not a beer drinker, but I even found a mild beer, Stella Artois, that was remarkably good. We had too much food to eat so we carried some the short distance back to the condo for Josh and Maddy to try, too.
There is a shuttle that runs through the resort with hop on, hop off service but the weather was remarkably mild and in the upper 30’s during our visit so we were happy to walk were we needed to go.
The resort is also a ski out/ski in location so it was ideal for easy access to the lifts and slopes. With the delayed flight, we really only had one full day to spend together and the kids had planned to spend as much time on the slopes as possible.
My husband and I had reserved a heated snow coach tour with Nova Guides for the afternoon. A driver picked us up at The Charter and drove us to the Lodge at Camp Hale for us to enjoy our ride. The snow coach took us to the top of Redemption Mountain where were greeted with a remarkable view of the surrounding peaks and passes from an elevation of nearly 12,500 feet.
Back at the condo, we began to cook dinner and relax together. Josh and Maddy shared how they’d spent their day, the runs they’d taken and how impressed they were with Beaver Creek. I’d packed several games, so we gathered around the large table to play Rummy, and though Josh really wanted to play Risk, I think our getaway was going to well, that everyone was afraid the competitive family game would ruin the experience. I could elaborate, but that’s a story for another time.
Later, Josh, Maddy, and I walked to the plaza to watch the ice skaters and buy some souvenirs before we packed in preparation for our trip home. We had an amazing time in Colorado- a near perfect getaway. My heart was full, happy to have this time with Josh but at the same time heavy-hearted knowing that soon he’d be boarding a plane and flying overseas to serve his deployment.
