Since my children were little, I’ve tried to teach them that life is an adventure. I’ve encouraged them try to think positively, even in the worst of circumstances. To think of the less than stellar moments as learning opportunities to grow from and not dwell on. I’ve also tried to encourage them step out of their comfort zone and try new things.
The result is children who love to travel, dream big and truly are willing to try just about anything once. They are so much more adventurous than I am, which shows in the recent bucket list that we created as a family.
Sure some of our bucket list includes visiting a state or region we’ve never been to. While other items include:
- Go skydiving
- Learn to scuba dive
- Take a motorcycle ride to California
- Go on another missions trip overseas
- Buy and restore a vintage RV
These are all items that my family feels that we should tackle- together or individually- to really live life to the fullest and we’re actively saving and making plans to accomplish them.
Some of the items on our list like visiting Hawaii and the New England States, stem from the many trips that we’ve taken throughout the US and our desire to visit each of the 50 states. Others, like our desire to serve on another overseas mission’s trip, stems from the experience that we had last summer as we traveled to Central America.
Traveling to Honduras as a family was a dream come true for me. Not only did my family have the opportunity to see a part of the world I never thought we’d travel too, we served tirelessly, side by side with the people of Honduras to provide dental care and improvements on their homes in their remote mountain-jungle village.
The experience required long hours of travel, delayed flights, some nearly impassable roads, walking in steep terrain, sleeping on a concrete floor and torrential downpours. It was physically, mentally and emotionally exhausting. And yet, it was one of the most rewarding experiences that we have ever been a part of, and one I long to repeat, with or without my family.
And when I do, I’ll make sure that once again, I pack some much needed pain relief to help me get through the week.
