A Laugh-Filled, Romantic Getaway at Chautauqua Harbor Hotel

Tonya Prater, Owner

If you’re looking for a gorgeous hotel with a serene lake view that is a short drive from the borders of Ohio and Pennsylvania, look no further than the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel. This property sits on the former nine-acre site of the Celoron Amusement Park where the world’s largest ferris wheel once stood. Today, you’ll find a quiet, lakefront property that provides wonderful service, great food at the onsite restaurant, and incredible sunsets.

This fall, my husband and I visited the National Comedy Center, and the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel was our base for our romantic, laugh-out-loud getaway. We arrived just as the leaves were beginning to change, and the view looked like it could have been a painting by a well-known artist. A winter stay with the landscape blanketed in snow would be equally beautiful.

About the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel

The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel is in the quaint village of Celoron, New York, directly on the Chautauqua Lake. This property has 135 rooms, many with balconies, a restaurant, lounge, an indoor ( and outdoor) pool and fitness center, and plenty of space to host your event, including weddings.

We stayed in a King Sofa Lake View Patio room with over 400 square feet of space. From the upgraded bedding to plush bath robes and high-quality amenities including an in-room refrigerator and Starbucks coffee and tea center on our floor, we had everything we needed for our comfort to ensure we had an enjoyable and relaxing stay.

After check-in, my husband took a nap, which allowed me time to explore the hotel and take a short tour with the concierge. Throughout the hotel, you’ll find historical photographs adorning the walls, each showcasing the site’s former life as an amusement park.

These glimpses into a bygone era added a unique charm to the hotel’s ambiance. There’s even a spot dedicated to the National Comedy Center off the lobby so you can learn about this incredible attraction before your visit.

The stunning natural surroundings of the hotel attract couples looking for a picturesque wedding venue. With its versatile spaces that can be elegantly transformed, it’s an ideal setting for couples to begin their journey together in a memorable and beautiful environment.

The Pier Ballroom and Conference Center can accommodate up to 350 guests, but there are also options available for more intimate events. There were several weddings taking place during our stay.

On Location Dining Lakehouse Tap and Grille

We enjoyed dinner outside on the spacious patio at the Lakehouse Tap and Grille. The restaurant serves an array of American cuisine, with a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

I ordered a delicious salad with arugula, pine nuts, shaved parmesan, and lemon olive oil dressing served with steak while my husband opted for the Char Grilled Frenched Pork Chop. Both meals were very tasty.

The service and food were fantastic, but the sunset was the true showstopper and I couldn’t resist stepping away from the table with guests from nearby tables to snap a couple of photos.

We walked on the path along the lake to view the vanishing sunset. Afterward, we grabbed a seat at one of the firepits. I was tempted to grab a drink at the Carousel Bar but I’d had wine at dinner and had given myself a one drink limit.

Make sure to walk over to the lighthouse and to Celoron’s Lucille Ball Memorial Park where you’ll find not one but two statues honoring the first lady of comedy.

Perfect for Couples and Families

The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel offers a diverse range of room layouts, ensuring that guests can find accommodations suited to their specific needs, whether it’s for family vacations or girlfriend getaways. The design of each room and suite caters to various group sizes and preferences, providing the ideal setting for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Surrounding Attractions

The hotel’s location offers more than just beautiful scenery. It’s a gateway to local attractions.

In addition to the National Comedy Center, we enjoyed touring the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum and taking the I Love Lucy driving tour.

We also visited Panama Rocks during the Fall Foliage Festival. The festival was great and the hike is voted one of the best hikes in New York. It did not disappoint.

If we’d had more time we would love to have explored a few more attractions like the Chautauqua Institution, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Graycliff Estate.

Hilarious Getaway Package

The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel offers several packages that ensure you’ll get a great deal and have a ton of fun during your stay.

My husband and I visited with the Hilarious Getaway Package. In addition to our deluxe accommodations, we also received two tickets to the National Comedy Center and the Lucy/Desi Museum, as well as a $30 meal voucher for the Lakehouse Tap and Grille.

The package truly started from the moment we checked in, with a gift bag containing our tickets, brochures, and amusing Groucho Marx glasses—which earned us a complimentary dessert at the restaurant. You’ll find more about this package here

My husband and I enjoyed our stay so much that one night wasn’t enough time to explore the area. We’d love to return for a second visit and this time take my mom and oldest son and his family for a multi-generational family trip. How fun does that sound?
