Preparing for Mission-Minded Travel & How You Can Help

I’m changing gears a bit. While I’ll continue to share the fun, family friendly, educational travel that my family experiences, I’m adding a new facet to the niche as we begin preparing for mission-minded travel. Earlier this month, I shared how my teenage sons’ traveled to New Jersey to serve as disaster relief workers after Hurricane Sandy pummeled the Eastern shore.

While that was an amazing experience for my boys’, it was not their first time volunteering. Since my children were little, I’ve tried to instill the importance of giving of our time and resources and to put others’ before ourselves. I’ve not always been a good role model, but together we’ve served in a crisis pregnancy center, assisted elderly in our family and community and learned valuable lessons while serving those in need in a homeless shelter (you should really read this post if you want a glimpse of my heart).

My children have also served on their own. Last year my oldest son was a camp counselor at a camp for inner city kids and this year all three of my kids plan to help at the same camp.

While I have loved serving with my kids’, I have prayed and hoped for years for an opportunity to serve as a family. And as my children have gotten older, that dream looked as though it would slip away, unfulfilled.

So when I learned that our church was taking a team to Honduras, I prayed fervently that my husband would be willing to go. And he was. Not only was he willing to go, he was excited by the prospect. And since Honduras is one of the main missions of our church, the cost for this trip is very minimal at only $500 per person.

We won’t know exactly what we’ll be doing until closer to July, but it looks like we may help finish construction on a church building. I can’t think of anything more perfect for my contractor husband!

Taking a leap of faith, we told our pastor that we wanted to go. We’re on the list and it looks like my dream will become a reality.

There’s just one snag. While we wouldn’t normally have a difficult time coming up with $2500 by the summer, the money is needed by the end of April. This poses a huge problem for us because as of right now, my husband has not worked regularly since December and after next week, we really don’t know how much work he will have for the remainder of the month.

We are making sacrifices for this opportunity and plan to have some type of fundraiser- possibly a garage sale that we hope will pay for our passports but we need more than that. Which is why I’m writing this post. From now until the end of April, you will see a donate button in the top sidebar of my site. If you feel led to help my family travel to Honduras, I would be grateful. If not, no pressure, simply ignore it. And if you read my posts in a reader you won’t even see it. But it is there.
