The Midwest is full of fun getaway weekend destinations, and Indiana is no exception. While it may often be overlooked for neighboring states, Chicago getaways or the Michigan shore, Indiana deserves a second look when you are planning your next romantic getaway.

Romantic Getaways in Indiana

Keep in mind that some things are just starting to roll back out due to the pandemic. Before you plan any romantic getaways in the midwest (or anywhere in the U.S.) it would be a good idea to call ahead and confirm hours, availability and amenities.

Indianapolis

For a big-city weekend, you don’t have to go all the way to Chicago or Columbus. Indianapolis is the perfect romantic getaway in Indiana. From sports to art and culture, diverse cuisines, and interesting neighborhoods, there’s something for everyone in Indianapolis. Climb the Soldiers and Sailors Monument for a birds-eye view of downtown Indianapolis before strolling the city streets exploring everything on offer. White River State Park is a great spot for a romantic stroll through the heart of downtown. Check out Broad Ripple Village for a multicultural selection of cafes, galleries, boutiques, and brewpubs. When deciding where to stay in Indianapolis, there are dozens of hotel choices, from ultra-luxury to budget-friendly.

Carmel

While many think of Carmel as an Indianapolis suburb, it’s a destination worthy of its own getaway. Starting with the Carmel Arts & Design District, where you are spoiled with choices of things to do. As you might guess, art and design are the heart of Carmel, with interior designers, art galleries, antique stores and boutique shops competing for attention with several amazing restaurants. Summertime brings tons of fun festivals, like the Carmel International Arts Festival. When choosing overnight accommodations for your Carmel getaway, there are many choices, from standard chain hotels, guest houses, and even a few campgrounds.

South Bend

South Bend may be the home of the University of Notre Dame, but besides being a fun college town, it’s also an ideal romantic getaway destination. For outdoor adventure enthusiasts, a trip on the St. Joseph River is the perfect date activity. Rent a kayak or canoe, pack a picnic, and spend the day on the river. There’s even a whitewater course for the truly adventurous. Of course, a university as prestigious as Notre Dame has a vibrant arts and culture scene as well. There are several performing arts centers, both on and off-campus, in addition to two art museums in town. Sunday brunch at Tippecanoe Place Restaurant is a must; guests dine in the 19th mansion of the Studebaker family. Many hotels cater to visiting parents and students, for a romantic getaway opt to check out one of the local mansions that have been converted to a Bed & Breakfast.

French Lick West Baden

Mineral Springs in Indiana? Indeed! The French Lick West Baden community has been a resort destination for over 100 years. In addition to mineral springs that beg for soaking, there are many things to do in French Lick West Baden. Starting with the historic resorts in town; the French Lick Springs Hotel was built in 1901 and is the epitome of opulence. The West Baden Springs hotel is equally stunning, with a 200-foot glass atrium. Each hotel offers a full-service spa and multiple dining options, from casual to fine dining, and there are four local golf courses to play as well.

Bloomington

Another vibrant college town in Indiana, Bloomington is the perfect romantic getaway in central Indiana. The nearby Hoosier National Forest is the perfect backwoods weekend getaway, with hiking trails, fishing lakes, campgrounds, and cozy log cabins and lodges tucked away near the forest. The Scenic View Lodge is a great choice, with romantic lodging and dining overlooking Monroe Lake. If you prefer a more urban getaway, downtown Bloomington has it all. Many hotels, B&B’s and inns, plus some pretty incredible restaurants and tasting rooms for the local wineries. Treat yourself to a weekend of exploring art galleries, museums, historic sites, and cultural centers.

Indiana Dunes

In 2019, this area became the newest U.S. National Park, which will further ensure the preservation of 15 miles of pristine coastline along the shore of Lake Michigan. You can enjoy a relaxing day on the beach, or take on a challenging hike in the sand dunes. The park is also open for horseback riding, fishing, paddling, and camping. The nearby towns of Porter and Chesterton have lodging and dining opportunities, or you can hop on a train and be in Chicago in less than two hours. Just 20 minutes away from Indiana Dunes National Park, there are many romantic things to do in Michigan City.

Corydon

Another gem tucked between the Hoosier National Forest and Louisville is the small southern town of Corydon. This historic village is the location of the first state capitol, from 1813 to 1816. There are many historic buildings along the downtown corridor, some of which are open for tours. The main square has live music on summer weekends, and lots of events throughout the year. Step back in time at Emery’s Ice Cream, an authentic old-fashioned soda fountain. There are several wineries within 30 minutes of Corydon, and plenty of restaurants offer down-home comfort food throughout the area.
