I almost couldn’t believe my eyes when I glanced off the interstate and spotted a tiny church during a road trip through southwest Virginia. It’s not that I was surprised to see it, I was more surprised that I hadn’t noticed it before. The route is one that I have taken many times before.
I’ve also been known to stop at a tiny church or two during my road trips and once spotted, I knew I needed to stop at this one too.
Located off I-81/I-77, this peaceful roadside chapel reminded me of the country church I grew up in. I couldn’t wait to take a closer look.
So I pulled off the exit, took a short detour and pulled into the parking lot for the tiny church. I found the door unlocked and stepped inside to find a cozy interior decorated with wooden pews and faux stained glass. Exactly what I’d expect to find in a prayer chapel.
The smallest church in Wytheville drew inspiration from the smallest church in America, another church I’ve visited (several times) that is located off I-95 near Savannah, Georgia.
During a business trip, a member of the outreach team found the church and was inspired to build one in Wytheville for weary travelers who needed a respite from the road.
Inside the tiny church, there are handwritten prayer requests and scriptures pinned to a bulletin board. If you’re inclined, you can pray over them and leave one of your own.
Outside you’ll find a trio of crosses and a statue of Jesus praying.
During my late summer visit, there were also a couple of rows of flowers and sunflowers by the field.
I’m glad that I stopped to take a closer look. I’m sure this won’t be the last time.
You’ll find the small church at 1090 Nye Road Wytheville, VA 24382. It’s an easy off/back on at the Interstate.
You’ll find a brief bit of information on this site, including directions.
While you’re in the area, you may consider spending a bit more time in Wytheville. This unique location has become one of my favorite places to stretch my legs on my drives to Florida, but you can easily find enough to do to spend several days. Read this article about Wytheville to help you plan.
