I’ve mentioned before that I take a ton of photos. I have thousands of photos and files on my phone, computers (yes, that is plural) and on my external hard drives. And there is no bigger pain then to travel with my job and realize that the files or photos I need to finish writing a freelance article or blog post are on a different device. WD My Cloud Home provides a solution.
This cloud-based storage home storage allows me to access all my files and photos from any device by using the My Cloud Home app.
I received a WD My Cloud Home for review and couldn’t wait to get it out of the box and set it up. I’ve been a fan of WD for years and regularly use the WD My Passport Ultra and it works perfectly when I take the time to add files to it and pack it in my laptop bag. But that doesn’t always happen.
With the WD My Cloud Home, my photos and files are backed up automatically to my very own personal cloud. My files aren’t stored anywhere else and I have access to them anywhere I go from each of my devices. It really doesn’t get any simpler.
Setting up the WD My Cloud Home
Set up couldn’t have been any simpler. The My Cloud Home comes with a personal cloud storage, ethernet cable, AC adapter and quick install guide. You simply plug the power cord into your power source and plug the ethernet cable into your router and you’re all set to begin using your system.
Next, you’ll visit mycloud.com/hello to set up your account and download the app that will allow you to use the system. You will need the WD Discovery App on all devices that you plan to access your cloud from. I installed it on my Android phone, my laptop and my desktop computer.
I also configured my cloud to backup my files and photos from my phone automatically. I love that this is effortless because I can’t tell you how many times I “intended” to back up my photos and then lost them when my phone crashed. Unfortunately, it’s happened more than once. The auto backup also ensures that I have the files and photos I need when I’m traveling and now I don’t need to worry about packing extra gear like my portable hard drive or extra SD cards- everything is stored on my cloud.
Back up Anything with My Cloud Home
I can’t get over the ease of backing everything up. The WD My Cloud Home can be configured to back up your Dropbox, Facebook, Google Photos and even your smart home camera monitors using IFTTW. I haven’t had time to set this up yet but I’m excited about that feature.
You can also plug your external hard drive directly into the My Cloud Home, so you have an additional backup. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a fan of backups for my backups.
Invite your Family Members to Store Files in the Cloud
You can also invite different users and they can have their own account using the same My Cloud Home. This means that everyone who lives in my house could have their storage space on this personal cloud system.
And another great perk? I can download my favorite movies and watch them using Plex which is built into the cloud. That means when my husband and I are van camping and it’s raining, or we can’t sleep, we can access our favorite movies to watch from the comfort of our van.
Where to purchase the WD My Cloud Home
I’m excited about this product and can’t wait to spend more time exploring all the features it provides. The My Cloud Home range from 2 TB to 8 TB storage. Price starts at $159 (about $20 cheaper on Amazon) to $319. Dual Drives are also available which essentially provide a built-in backup if your hard drive was to malfunction. These range from 4 TB to 16 TB and prices start at $309 and go up to $699.
You can purchase the WD My Cloud Home directly from WD here.

I've had this on my "to do" list for so long. I really need to organize our photos and videos so they don't get damaged. I'd love to be able to store them. It would be great to add all our old dvd's also.
