Big Chicken- Marietta, Georgia- Legend, Landmark or Roadside Attraction?

The Big Chicken Roadside Attraction is located in Marrietta near Atlanta, Georgia

While visiting the Atlanta area, the kids and I couldn’t help but notice a unique structure not far from our hotel in Marietta. I wanted to take a picture of this roadside attraction near Atlanta, but wouldn’t you know that was one of the times that I’d left my camera in our hotel room? After all, we were just running out to grab a bite to eat, what would we possibly see on the way? Believe me when I say, you never know!

I vowed on our next trip out of the hotel room, I’d make a special trip just to snap a picture of this 56-foot tall fowl complete with rolling eyes and a moving beak, known by the locals as The Big Chicken. Though the attached restaurant is now a KFC, the original eatery began as a hamburger shop. When the owner began selling chicken, he thought up the Big Chicken as a way to get his diner noticed. The publicity stunt worked and has continued to work to this day.

The landmark has become a favorite among locals. In 1993, it was damaged by a storm and rumors began to circulate that it could possibly be demolished, the public outcry led KFC to spend nearly $700,000 for repairs.

In the area? You’ll find the Big Chicken roadside attraction near the intersection of HWY 41/North Cobb Pkwy and HWY 120/Roswell Rd. I assure you,  you can’t miss it!
